Healing
At The Piercery, we see healing as a slow-and-steady kind of thing. It’s a marathon not a sprint!
Your piercing is on the right track when there’s no more redness, swelling, flaking, soreness, or gunk. It should feel better as time goes on, not irritated or stuck. Be patient, trust the process, and let your body do its thing!

Every body’s
different
so healing isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation.
It all depends on your piercing, your stress, your sleep, and how well you stick to aftercare.
But one golden rule? Hands off. Always. You can only touch when you’re cleaning!
Common Aftercare Questions
What’s normal while healing?
- Short answer? More than you might think!
- At first, your piercing might:
- - Bleed a little
- - Ooze clear or whitish-yellow fluid (not pus!)
- - Swell or bruise
- - Feel sore, itchy, or tender
- - Build up some crust around the jewellery
- All totally normal. That crusty stuff? It’s lymph fluid doing its job. Redness, dryness, and tightness around the jewellery are all part of the healing process (even if it looks a little weird).
- People often mistake these signs for infection, but don’t stress. If something’s bugging you or you’re not sure, just reach out. We offer free check-ups!
During healing:
- Still seeing a bit of fluid, skin tightening, or colour changes? Yip, still normal. Your jewellery probably won’t move much (and shouldn’t). So don’t twist it, no matter how tempting. That only slows things down. It's like reopening a wound every time as your piercing heals from the outside in.
- Skipping your aftercare routine is a fast track to irritation - bacteria loves a neglected piercing. So stay consistent. Keep it clean (even if it's doing well!). Trust your body.
- Also, just because it looks healed doesn’t mean it is. A body piercing heals from the outside in. So even if it feels fine, keep up your aftercare. And remember: even fully healed piercings can close quickly. Love it? Leave jewellery in it!
After healing:
- Most of our piercing jewellery is internally threaded, which means: Lefty loosey, righty tighty. Unscrew the top by turning it anti-clockwise to loosen, and clockwise to tighten it back.
- Got a push-pin top? Just push it in until it feels nice and snug. When removing, pull the top and post apart gently but firmly. (If you're unsure, feel free to pop in and we’ll help you out.)
How do I look after my jewellery?
- Treat your jewellery like the little treasure it is. Avoid lotions and potions where possible like hair products or perfumes that may contain reactants.
- All our jewellery is tarnish-free, but giving them a little extra love keeps them looking their best. For everyday cleaning, use a dry, soft cloth. For a deeper clean, gentle soap and warm water will do the trick (just make sure to dry them properly after). You can also pop in-store and let us clean your jewellery for you in our hydrosonic cleaners.
